The book “Darth bane: Path Of Destruction” by Drew Karpyshyn tells the story of how one of the most powerful Sith Lords, Darth Bane, came to power. Dessel is a mineworker who has been ensnared into a lifetime of work because of his dead drunk father’s debt. He has lived on the mining planet of Apatros all of his life, though most of his life was a blur of his fathers anger. While constantly being harassed by the other miners, Des begins to notice a dark power inside him that feeds off of his anger. The mines had strengthened Des and he now towered over the other miners. Though after seriously injuring a miner who picked a fight with him, Des is suspended from the mines and is left to gather more debt. Without pay from the mines, Des looks to the only Cantina on the planet to make some money. He has always been lucky in Sabacc games and decides to play against the crew of a Republic transport. Des constantly wins and after arguing with an Ensign, is accused of cheating. As the crew goes to attack Des, the Cantina owner kicks them all out, and then consoles Des. They talk of the Sith and the Brotherhood of Darkness. The barkeeper mentions that the Sith army is desperate for soldiers and are constantly walking the port.
As Des is leaving the Cantina, the drunken Ensign and his shipmates jump him. He ends up killing the Ensign with the power his rage produces. He now must get off the planet to escape capture. He remember the bar keepers story about the Sith army and decides to join. It is now that Des takes on the name Bane. This name comes from his memories of his father, who often called him the ‘Bane of his existence’. His story is then relocated to his travels in the Sith army. Because of his natural skill, Bane quickly becomes the leader of his own unit. When put into an impossibly dangerous situation, Bane disobeys orders from his command. During a raid Bane almost single handedly saves his entire unit, calling upon his hidden strength. Though because of disobeying orders, Bane is taken to the high command and punished. His captors soon begin to realize the power inside Bane and send him to the Sith Academy. Here he will be trained to be a great Sith of the brotherhood, and he soon finds out that the power he was feeling inside him was the Force. Bane soon grew very powerful, though not powerful enough. After loosing in a lightsaber duel with another student he is mocked constantly. He lashes out with his anger and kills the other student. It is not that his teachers take an interest in him. But soon his mind gets the better of him as he realizes how many people he has really killed, and he pulls back from his power and the academy. This realization dismisses the flame he one had inside him. His teachers soon refuse to teach him because of his weakness and he is left alone. He soon challenged the Academy’s top student to a duel and lost, being critically injured in the process. He now turned to the school archives to receive his training and begins reading about the old Sith.
